Hi Dr Braverman, I have been diagnosed with RA. My husband and I are trying to conceive (we don't have any children yet) and I would like to know what can I do to minimize my risks of having an autistic child?Thank You, Angela

RE: Minimize my risks during pregnancy
RA and Autism may share a common genetic etiology (with strong association with HLA-DRB1*0401 and HLA-DRB1*0404 alleles for both diseases). If you carry these alleles and transmit them to your child, it does not mean that your child will automatically be affected but he will be exposed to a higher risk. By definition, an autoimmune condition may complicate pregnancy, modulating the already challenged maternal immune system. A full immune panel test is required before conception then during pregnancy to get a snap shot of your immune issues. This will allow to give you the right treatment to shape the most immune tolerant environment possible for a healthy pregnancy.
